Low Cost Community Acupuncture in Brighton & Hove
Community acupuncture at the Tree of Life Centre
Accessible, expert acupuncture in our calm studio…
Tree of Life Centre has been running one of Brighton & Hove’s longest-established low-cost community acupuncture clinics for over 13 years. Our clinic brings together qualified, registered acupuncturists in a shared, nurturing space, making regular acupuncture accessible without compromising on quality or individual attention. Treatments start from just £25 on a sliding scale, depending on your circumstances.
Community acupuncture simply means that several people receive treatment at the same time in a shared, peaceful space. Privacy screens are placed between the treatment couches, and the serene atmosphere supports full relaxation. Each person receives a fully personalised assessment and treatment from a qualified, registered acupuncturist, most of whom also run busy private practices. The ‘community’ simply refers to the shared room format. Because practitioners can treat several patients in parallel, the clinic can operate more efficiently, keeping treatments affordable and passing those savings directly on to you.
This model has deep roots in traditional East Asian medicine, where group treatment settings have been practised for centuries. At Tree of Life Centre, we’ve built on that tradition to create a calm, inclusive environment where anyone in Brighton & Hove can access the benefits of regular acupuncture.

Community acupuncture vs one-to-one acupuncture
Both formats offer the same quality of treatment from our skilled, registered practitioners. The key differences are:
- Setting: Community sessions take place in a shared, multi-bed clinic hosted within our nurturing studio., while one-to-one sessions are fully private. No more than 5 people are seen at a time, and fold out screens are placed between clients, increasing privacy.
- Cost: Community acupuncture starts from £25. One-to-one private sessions are priced separately – see our Acupuncture therapy page for details.
- Duration: Community sessions allow 15–30 minutes of needle retention. One-to-one appointments are longer and allow for more extended consultation time.
- Best for: Community acupuncture is ideal for ongoing or maintenance treatment, general wellbeing, and those who are cost-conscious. One-to-one is well suited to those who prefer complete privacy, a more spacious treatment experience, or have complex, multi-system conditions requiring longer assessment time.

What to expect at your first visit
Arriving for your first community acupuncture session is a relaxed, straightforward experience. Here’s what typically happens:
- On arrival, come straight through the studio door where you will be greeted – your acupuncturist will take a brief intake, asking about your main reason for attending and any relevant health background.
- They will check your pulse at both wrists and look at your tongue — both are traditional diagnostic tools in Chinese medicine.
- Acupuncture points are selected based on your individual presentation. Common areas include the lower legs and feet, and lower arms and wrists, though points can be anywhere on the body.
- Fine, sterile needles are gently inserted. You may feel a mild sensation – most people describe it as a slight pressure or warmth.
- Needles are either retained for 15–30 minutes, or in some cases removed immediately, depending on the technique and style of acupuncture.
- Your acupuncturist will advise on follow-up treatment frequency and the likely duration of a course of treatment for your particular concerns.
Modesty is always respected. The atmosphere is inviting, calm and conducive to relaxation. Most people find they feel deeply at ease within just a few minutes of settling in. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness to ensure a safe, welcoming environment for all our patients.

Frequently asked questions
What is community acupuncture?
Community acupuncture is a format where several patients receive acupuncture treatment at the same time in a shared, calm clinic space. Each person receives a personalised assessment and treatment from a qualified acupuncturist — you are not sharing a practitioner. The shared room format allows clinics to keep costs significantly lower than private one-to-one sessions, without compromising on the quality or individualisation of your treatment.
How much does community acupuncture cost at Tree of Life Centre?
We offer a sliding scale to make treatment accessible to everyone: £25 for those who are unwaged or on benefits, £30 for low income, £35 for average income, and £40 for those with a higher or comfortable income. You choose the rate that honestly reflects your financial situation.
Is the acupuncture at Tree of Life Centre the same quality as private acupuncture?
Yes, absolutely. Every practitioner at our community clinic is a qualified, registered acupuncturist with professional-level training and experience. Most of them also run private practices, holding 1-to-1 sessions with acupuncture clients. The lower cost reflects the shared-room format, not any reduction in treatment quality, expertise, experience or care. Many of our community patients have been attending for years.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes — pre-booking is required for all community acupuncture sessions. Please do not come to the clinic without a confirmed appointment. You can book online via our booking system or contact us directly by phone or email.
What conditions can community acupuncture help with?
Our practitioners are experienced in treating a wide range of conditions. These include musculoskeletal pain and injuries, stress, anxiety and low mood, women’s health including fertility and menstrual issues, pregnancy support, menopause, digestive complaints, fatigue, headaches, and general wellbeing. If you’re unsure whether acupuncture is suitable for your needs, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to advise, or feel free to brows the profile pages of our community acupuncture team.
Is community acupuncture suitable for first-time patients?
Yes. Our community clinic sessions are open to both first-time patients and those continuing a course of treatment. If you have never had acupuncture before, your practitioner will take extra time to explain the process, answer any questions, and ensure you are completely comfortable before treatment begins.
What is the difference between community acupuncture and a one-to-one private session?
The main differences are setting and price. In a community session, you’ll be in a comfortable shared room with other patients — the environment is calm and quiet, with peaceful soothing music, and no conversation expected. Folding screens are placed between treatment couched to offer privact.. A one-to-one private session takes place in a fully private room and allows for a longer consultation period. Both formats deliver the same quality of personalised acupuncture treatment. For our private one-to-one sessions, please visit our Acupuncture therapy page.
How long does a community acupuncture session last?
Your first visit will take a little longer as your practitioner takes an intake and discusses your health background. For ongoing sessions, you should allow approximately 45–60 minutes in total, with needles retained for between 15–30 minutes during treatment.
Does it hurt?
Acupuncture needles are extremely fine — much thinner than a hypodermic needle. Most people feel little or nothing as each needle is inserted. Some describe a mild sensation of warmth, heaviness, or gentle pressure at the needle site, which is a normal sign that the acupuncture point is being activated. The experience is generally very relaxing.
Where is the Tree of Life Centre acupuncture clinic in Brighton & Hove?
Tree of Life Centre is located at 143–145 Portland Road, Hove, BN3 5QJ. We are conveniently accessible from across Brighton & Hove, with good local bus links and street parking available nearby. If you need directions or travel advice, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 01273 220159 or at info@tolcentre.com.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies significantly depending on the individual and the condition being treated. Acute conditions often respond within a small number of sessions. Chronic or long-standing issues typically benefit from a longer course of treatment, often weekly initially, then tapering to fortnightly or monthly maintenance. Your acupuncturist will give you a realistic expectation at your first appointment.
Are the practitioners at Tree of Life Centre fully qualified and insured?
Yes. All of our community acupuncturists are degree-qualified, fully insured, and registered with a recognised professional body — such as the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), the Association of Acupuncture Clinicians (AAC), or the Acupuncture Society. You can view each practitioner’s qualifications and background in the team section above.
