Meet the reflexology team
What is reflexology?
Reflexology is a gentle, non-invasive complementary therapy available at Tree of Life Centre in Brighton & Hove. It is a gentle, deeply restorative approach to wellbeing that has been practised for generations. It sits beautifully alongside other forms of healthcare and suits people of all ages and backgrounds — whether you’re looking for support with a specific concern, or seeking deep relaxation and a restorative reset.
At its heart, reflexology recognises that physical, emotional and mental wellbeing are all connected. It takes a whole-person approach — helping you feel healthier, more balanced, and better equipped to meet the demands of everyday life.
How does reflexology work?
Reflexology draws on a long-established understanding from oriental medicine: that specific points on the feet — and sometimes the hands and face — correspond to the organs, glands and systems throughout the rest of the body. Based on the principle that the feet contain a map of the entire body, a reflexologist applies skilled pressure and massage to these points, detecting and addressing areas of tension or imbalance and encouraging the body back towards its own natural equilibrium.
Every session is shaped around you — your health, your lifestyle, and whatever you’re hoping to get from the treatment — rather than following a fixed routine.

What happens during your treatment
Your appointment begins with a consultation, during which your therapist asks about your health, lifestyle and what you’d like to get from the treatment, so the session can be tailored to you specifically.
You remain fully clothed, simply removing your shoes and socks, and relax on a comfortable treatment couch, with pillowsand a blanket. You reflexology works methodically through the reflex points on your feet, using their thumbs and fingers to apply gentle, specific pressure and massage techniques.
The experience is calming and restorative, giving both body and mind space to switch off from everyday demands and focus on healing and recovery.
Afterwards, people usually feel lighter, calmer and more at ease. We recommend drinking plenty of water following treatment and allowing time to rest where possible.

Frequently asked questions
What is reflexology and how does it work?
Reflexology is a complementary therapy that applies gentle pressure to specific reflex points on the feet — and sometimes the hands or face — that are understood to correspond to different areas and systems of the body. By working these reflex points, practitioners aim to release areas of tension or imbalance, supporting the body’s natural processes and promoting deep relaxation and wellbeing. It is a non-invasive, fully clothed treatment.
What conditions can reflexology help with?
Reflexology is used to support a wide range of physical and emotional concerns, including stress and anxiety, sleep difficulties, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, headaches, fatigue, back and neck tension, and general wellbeing maintenance. Many people also use it as complementary support for fertility, pregnancy, menopause, and post-surgery recovery. It does not diagnose or treat medical conditions, but it valuable and supportive as part of a broader approach to health and wellbeing.
Does reflexology hurt?
Reflexology should not be painful. The pressure applied is responsive and controlled, and most people find it deeply relaxing. Occasionally people may notice mild sensitivity over particular points, if there is congestion there – this is normal and eases as the session progresses. If anything feels uncomfortable, your therapist will always adjust accordingly.
What should I expect during a reflexology session?
You will remain fully clothed throughout the session, just removing your shoes and socks, and lying down to relax on a comfortable treatment couch with pillows and a blanket. Your therapist will begin with a brief consultation to understand your needs, then work directly on reflex points on your feet, using a range of pressure point and massage techniques. Sessions are generally 60 mins for pure reflexology, or 90 minutes where combined with body massage. People find the experience deeply relaxing — many fall asleep during treatment.
How many reflexology sessions will I need?
This depends on your reasons for coming and how your body responds. For general relaxation and wellbeing, even a single session can be beneficial. For specific concerns — such as hormonal health, digestive issues, or stress management — a course of regular sessions is generally recommended to build cumulative benefit. Your therapist will discuss this with you at your first appointment.
Is reflexology safe during pregnancy?
Reflexology can be very supportive during pregnancy, helping with back pain and discomfort, while also keeping the nervous system resourced and relaxed. However, practitioners tend to avoid certain reflex points during the first trimester. Please let us know when booking if you are pregnant so we can pair you with the most appropriate therapist and ensure your treatment is adapted accordingly.
What is the difference between reflexology and massage?
Massage works on the whole body, targeting all muscles and soft tissue using a wide range of strokes and techniques. Reflexology works specifically on reflex points on the feet (and sometimes hands or face) that are believed to correspond to other areas of the body. While Reflexology usually feels enjoyably like foot massage, it is also working at a deeper level. Both are deeply relaxing and complementary — and several of our practitioners offer both, sometimes in combination within a single session.
Can reflexology help with stress and anxiety?
Yes — stress reduction is one of the most common and well-supported benefits of reflexology. The treatment activates the parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging the body to shift from a state of tension and reactivity into rest and repair mode. Many clients notice a significant reduction in stress and anxiety both during and after their sessions, with effects that can persist for days or longer with regular treatment.
Can reflexology help with hormonal health and menopause?
Many women find reflexology beneficial for supporting hormonal balance across all life stages — from managing PMS and menstrual irregularities to supporting perimenopause and menopause symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep disturbance and mood changes. Our reflexologists have experience working with women’s health and can tailor sessions accordingly.
Is reflexology suitable for everyone?
Reflexology is generally safe for most people of all ages. There are some situations where it may need to be adapted or avoided — for example, certain foot conditions, deep vein thrombosis, or recent surgery. Reflexology does not treat or cure medical conditions, but it offers valuable support as part of an integrated approach to health and wellbeing. Your therapist will carry out a consultation before your first session to check that reflexology is appropriate for you. If you have any concerns, please get in touch before booking.
